TOOURISMUS. About traveling and its effects on climate, landscape, infrastructure, and society.
How can we imagine a form of tourism that does not destroy its own basis of livelihood?
The travel industry is once again achieving record figures - raising questions about the impact on climate, landscape, infrastructure and society.
The exhibition "About Tourism" in the Architekturzentrum Wien takes a critical look at this defining phenomenon of our time and also presents alternatives.
The show is set up like a tourism fair, where visitors can find out more at exhibition stands dedicated to various topics after passing through a "reception".
The curators Karoline Mayer & Katharina Ritter, together with the architecture firm ASAP, have designed stations with labels such as "village", "alpine pasture" or "city". Although a total of eight chapters highlight the problems of constantly increasing traffic, privatization of public space, soil sealing and construction activity, an important part of the show is also dedicated to alternative strategies that present exemplary initiatives and models in the spirit of degrowth.
There are also studies and case studies for alternative vacation ideas on display, while audio stations and future scenarios created with the help of AI illustrate the possibilities of ecologically responsible and affordable tourism.
"About Tourism" at the Architekturzentrum Wien runs until September 9, daily from 10 am to 7 pm. The exhibition is accompanied by the illustrated book "Über Tourismus" with several essays. (written by Cem Angeli)
