REMIX. From Gerhard Richter to Katharina Grosse
How does something new emerge from what already exists? The exhibition Remix at Albertina Modern offers a striking answer: Two significant collections—the Albertina’s contemporary art collection and the renowned Viehof Collection from the Rhineland—resonate with one another. Out of this emerges an exhibition that is more than a mere juxtaposition. It is a visual experiment, an artistic dialogue, a cultural statement.
In our film about the exhibition, Ralph Gleis, director of Albertina Modern, and curator Constanze Malissa provide insights into the curatorial concept, the selection of works, and the historical as well as political contexts of the presented positions. The camera guides viewers through 13 exhibition rooms featuring 24 artistic positions—from icons like Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, and Joseph Beuys to powerful, previously lesser-known voices such as Karin Kneffel and Corinne Wasmuht.
Particularly compelling is the nearly equal presence of female and male artists. The exhibition thus opens up new perspectives on German art since the 1960s—political, poetic, monumental. Whether it’s Polke’s alchemical lacquer paintings, Beuys’ legendary Documenta signs, or Katharina Sieverding’s golden self-portraits, the works tell stories of a country in transformation—and of artists who have helped shape this change.
Our film invites you to explore the exhibition cinematically—and hopefully soon experience it in person. For Remix is not only a journey through six decades of German contemporary art, but a celebration of artistic encounter.
