EGON SCHIELE. From the conservation department of the Albertina museum

Category: Behind the Scenes 6. September 2021
Egon Schiele is certainly one of the most famous artists of the modern age, a time with hallmarks like technical progress, industrialization, but also the dissolution of traditional social structures, loneliness, and so on. Like no other, Schiele captured this loneliness of the individual and the pressures to which he is exposed on paper, and not least for this reason he was a pioneer for many artists who followed him.

On the occasion of the upcoming Albertina Modern exhibition "Schiele and the Consequences," we visited conservator Karine Bovagnet at the Albertina for our "Museum in A Nutshell" series. She gives us an insight into the process of restoring Schiele's extremely fragile works on paper and thus also into an area of activity that remains closed and mostly unnoticed by visitors to the exhibitions, because the aim of conservation is not only to preserve the works, but also to ensure that the conservating intervention remains as unnoticed as possible by the viewer.
