MARKO SAJN. Becoming one
At first glance, Marko Šajn’s works appear remarkably composed. Figures, colours and lines seem to merge into coherent forms, almost as if each element had found its predetermined place within a larger whole. Yet the closer one looks, the more this apparent order begins to shift. Bodies overlap in impossible ways, limbs seem to belong to more than one figure, and what initially appears to be a single shape reveals itself as a multitude.
This tension between the individual and the collective lies at the heart of Šajn’s work. His compositions are informed by his classical education in printmaking, where every movement matters and the possibilities of colour and form are deliberately limited. In his sculptures, made by bending and welding steel without preliminary sketches, a line develops almost intuitively until it forms a complete circle. Figures pass through one another, making in three dimensions what is already physically ambiguous in his paintings even more complex.
For Šajn, however, this merging of forms is more than a formal experiment. It reflects an idea of human connectivity: the belief that individuals gain strength through their relationships with others, and that a society is capable of things that an isolated individual cannot achieve. A large figure supported by several smaller ones might evoke a family, a community, a company—or a society and the structures through which it organises itself.
In Becoming One, Šajn brings together painting and sculpture to explore this idea from two very different directions: the controlled precision of the image and the raw physicality of steel. What happens when separate bodies become one form? Where does the individual end and the collective begin? And what might our apparent independence conceal about how deeply we depend on one another?
In the interview, Marko Šajn talks about these questions, his artistic process, and the ideas behind the works presented at STRABAG ART.
