YOSHITOMO NARA. Loneliness
With the transformation of society from a traditional to a modern one, not only have family units become smaller, but usually both parents are in the workforce, leaving gaps between school and parental care where children are left to fend for themselves. The term latchkey child expresses this circumstance. Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara says he was often alone as a child, though not lonely. He only felt lonely later, he says, when he moved to Tokyo and knew no one there in the midst of the mass of people. In our film clip on the occasion of the Yoshitomo Nara exhibition "All My Little Words" at the Albertina Modern, the artist tells us to what extent loneliness and his childhood developed into something inspiring that is still reflected in his work today.
