ANNE GLASSNER. Schlaf als Widerstand
What happens when a person lies down and sleeps in the middle of a public space? For visual artist Anne Glassner, this moment is much more than just a performance—it is an invitation to perception, reflection, and pause. In our CastYourArt artist portrait “Sleep as Resistance”, she speaks about her practice of sleep as a form of art and how her performances deeply move those who witness them.
Glassner’s performances are quiet gestures with powerful impact. The lying, resting body within the rush of daily life becomes a political statement—against the speed of our times, against the pressure of constant productivity, and as a critique of capitalist structures. Particularly as a woman in public space, her actions highlight social tensions and boundaries.
Her works are never purely conceptual or theoretical. Humor, physical presence, and sensuality run through her performances, which often evolve in response to earlier works. Her “duvet dresses,” first created during lockdown, later transformed into a performative pillow fight—a playful yet profound exploration of intimacy, closeness, and the personal archive.
People respond to Anne Glassner’s performances with curiosity, wonder, and at times, tears. The sleeping body confronts us with something deeply human—our vulnerability, our mortality, our shared existence. Glassner speaks about the significance of sleep in public, the social questions it raises, and why it is essential to give meaning even to the quietest of moments.
A film about a form of art that speaks softly—and echoes loudly.
