Kunsthalle Krems - Architecture and History
The Kunsthalle Krems is a part of the Krems art mile that brings together the cultural highlights in the area, like the Minoriten church, the Forum Frohner, the Krenek museum or the Lower Austria State gallery which is under construction.
Opposite the Kunsthalle is the museum of caricature, the only one in Austria dedicated to this art form. It offers regular exhibitons and a permanent collection of the oeuvre of the famous cartoonist Manfred Deix.
The Kunsthalle Krems is located in a former tobacco factory built in 1852. It has been refurbished in order to accomodate the exhibition facilities by architect Adolf Krischanitz who won the architectural competition in 1992.
The challenge he faced was to get the old industrial building to meet the strict requirements of a first class international exhibition space.
The architectural concept displays a harmonius interaction between the contemporary interior, the modifications and the old building. The whole spatial arrangement receives a new structure, and the interior space attains a characteristic personality with its new elements, while the columned hall remains the key component of the transformation.
From a closed industrial area to an open public space – the simplicity and clarity of the concept is transmitted to the construction, the result is an exhibition surface of approximately 1.500 square meters.
The grand opening of the Kunsthalle Krems in 1995 was made with the exhibition „Water and Wine“.
This time the reopening after the ongoing remodelling phase will be on July 1st 2017, with an extensive exhibition about abstract painting „Abstract Painting Now“, furthermore there will be work by Tobias Pils on display in the central hall.
Since July 2016, the artistic director of Kunsthalle Krems is Florian Steininger, former curator of the Bank Austria Kunstforum in Vienna. (written by Cem Angeli)
