The Paris Art Salons - The Dream Archive from the Musée d'Orsay

In the choice of works made for the Albertina exhibition "Degas, Cezanne, Seurat. The Dream Archive from the Musée d'Orsay, important art movements of the 19th century are represented, like historicism, realism, impressionism and neo-impressionism, symbolism as well as cartoons and salon painting.

In France, salon painting with its historical and mythological topics and its neoclassical and academic style was predominant at the time, while modernist movements were emerging in opposition to it.

Since the 17th century, the salons with their yearly exhibitions were, much like today’s art fairs, the stage for upcoming or established artists, where they would receive the praise or condemnation of the jury and public. Many artists who eventually became famous were refused by these salons and founded their own salons, like the Salon of the refusés (the refused), an endeavour that proved to be crucial for the development of the avant-garde.
