In the End: Architecture - Journeys through Time 1959 till 2019
Sixty years of history of architecture are now on display at Vienna based Architekturzentrum Wien. The show is the last exhibition of founding director Dietmar Steiner. If architecture, because of the changes within the building business, is at its end or if it is architecture that in the end rules is a question, this exhibition answers with a certain optimism considering architecture. This because it does not only present how architecture became a money-driven business but it points out that there have always been tendencies within architecture, which highlight the question - how can architecture support a higher quality of living, which is affordable and sustainable at the same time.
Curated by the younger generation of Architekturzentrum Curators - Karoline Mayer, Sonja Pisarik and Katharine Ritter - the view on architectural history became a view on the presence and future of architecture as well. So to say the view into the past - oriented on Dietmar Steiners architectural socialization - was put into discussion with a view on current tendencies in architecture that engage with ecological, social, structural, legislative, contextual, historical and theoretical aspects and show, that architecture is a long way from the end. The presentation itself motivates to discover - meaning it gives enough freedom to search and find your own way through the presented projects and themes. What you need to bring in as a visitor is mainly interest in architecture and of course some free time. (written by Wolfgang Haas)
