THINKING LIGHT. Angela Stief on Brigitte Kowanz
Brigitte Kowanz was not merely a light artist – she was a thinker of light. In this first part of the film series, Angela Stief, director of the Albertina Modern, reflects on her close friendship with the artist and on a curatorial relationship that spanned decades.
Kowanz’s oeuvre never settled into conclusions. It remained open-ended, forward-looking, and fundamentally committed to the evolving nature of perception and media. From the early 1980s until her death in 2022, she created a body of work that was radical in its method and poetic in its effect.
This film reveals not only the artwork but also the artist – her meticulous precision, her embrace of chance, her constant dialogue with the materials and codes of the present. It invites us to engage with the retrospective exhibition not just with our eyes, but with thought, attention, and wonder.
