KLAUS ALBRECHT SCHRÖDER. A retrospective on 25 years as a visionary leader of the Albertina
Under his visionary leadership, the museum underwent transformative development, marked by ambitious expansions, groundbreaking exhibitions, and the cultivation of a global reputation.
One of Schröder’s greatest achievements was the reopening of the Albertina in 2003 after a ten-year restoration. The result was a revitalized space that seamlessly combined historic grandeur with modern accessibility. He also spearheaded the establishment of Albertina Modern in 2020, giving contemporary art a prominent stage, and in 2024, he inaugurated Albertina Klosterneuburg at the site of the former Essl Museum.
During his tenure, Schröder curated numerous landmark exhibitions that drew millions of visitors and enhanced the museum’s international reputation. Additionally, he significantly expanded the collection by acquiring major works, enriching the already impressive holdings of graphic art, photography, and modern masterpieces.
This interview offers a unique opportunity to reflect on Schröder’s accomplishments and the lasting impact of his leadership on Austria’s cultural landscape.
